Concerto n°1 pour piano en Ré mineur Op. 15 - 3 : Rondo, Allegro non troppo

About this work

The piano presents the Rondo’s refrain almost alone: a taut, sharply articulated motif in D minor. The orchestra immediately takes it up and turns the compact gesture into a collective exchange. This finale does not simply release the concerto’s earlier tension. Its rhythmic pressure remains active while the harmony gradually opens a path toward D major.

Episodes set rapid passagework beside broad chords and sections in which several voices pursue one another. At the keyboard, clear counterpoint matters more than display speed. Orchestral accompaniment must remain alert without covering the main motif. Accents work best when grounded in the bass and released at once, allowing the bar to keep its spring.

Practise the refrain at several tempos with consistent fingering and articulation. Then isolate successive entries in contrapuntal episodes before restoring their shared pulse. Save power for the final span: the move into the major key and the closing cadence mean more when the preceding thirty-seven pages have not been treated as a single race.
