Concerto n°2 pour piano en Si b majeur Op. 83 - 3 : Andante

About this work

The Andante begins with an extended cello solo, while the piano makes no immediate claim to the foreground. Brahms shifts the concerto’s centre: for several minutes the keyboard soloist listens, accompanies and then continues a melody that originated in the orchestra. Cello timbre and woodwind replies give the movement the intimacy of chamber music.

When the piano enters, its arpeggios and chords must support the phrase without thickening the bass. The middle section darkens the harmony and increases rhythmic pressure; the return of calm is persuasive only if that tension has been fully present. Exchanges among cello, clarinets and piano require a shared dynamic but not identical colour.

Rehearse the cello solo first with bass lines alone, then add the piano while concentrating on releases. Change pedal with the harmony rather than with every motif. These eleven pages leave little room for late adjustment: agree on breaths and tempo recoveries before assembling the full orchestra.
