The orchestra presents an extended exposition before the violin enters alone, climbing from its lower register. Brahms wrote the Op. 77 Concerto in 1878 for Joseph Joachim and gave its first movement a symphonic scale. The soloist does more than decorate the themes: double stops, arpeggios and wide registral shifts rebuild them from within.

The challenge is to connect that virtuosity to orchestral bass and harmony. A brilliant attack matters only when it continues the energy of the preceding tutti. Accompaniment must retain its pulse as the violin broadens a phrase, while the soloist distinguishes structural notes from figuration. The cadenza can then belong to the form instead of becoming a detached display.
