Concerto pour violon et violoncelle en La mineur Op. 102 - 1 : Allegro

About this work

Brahms’s 1887 Double Concerto begins with a brief orchestral gesture immediately interrupted by the cello alone. The violin answers, and the two soloists meet before the orchestra’s broad exposition. The sequence resembles an introduction of characters: each instrument has its own register and articulation, yet the motifs are designed to circulate among all three partners.

In this Allegro, virtuosity often lies in dialogue rather than speed. The cello must cross the orchestral texture without forcing its lower register, the violin needs presence without a hard upper sound, and the orchestra must leave room for both lines. Unisons, thirds and imitations require shared tuning and a common idea of the phrase.

Rehearse the opening recitatives without conductor first, allowing the soloists to establish breaths and replies. Add orchestral bass lines next, then inner voices. Across thirty-six pages, identify which instrument actually leads the tempo at every change. That shifting responsibility prevents the ensemble from becoming a massive accompaniment behind two soloists.
