Concerto pour violon et violoncelle en La mineur Op. 102 - 2 : Andante
About this work
In the Andante, violin and cello present an extended melody together, frequently in unison or octaves. Brahms does not ask them to dissolve into an anonymous colour. The cello’s grain and the violin’s brightness remain distinct, supported by orchestral chords and wind replies that broaden the phrase.
Tuning is especially exposed when both soloists move in parallel. They need shared vibrato speed, articulation and breathing points without copying one another’s sound exactly. The orchestra sustains the harmony through long note values, so each bass change must be prepared and every release coordinated.
Practise these eight pages with the soloists alone, initially without vibrato, then add bass lines and principal winds. Fix destination notes before shaping local rubato. In more animated passages, retain a common pulse beneath the ornamentation. The Andante’s emotion grows from patiently built unity, not from an added slowdown at every cadence.
