Danse hongroise n°02 en Ré mineur (4 mains)

About this work

The Allegro non assai of the second Hungarian Dance moves through D minor with contained tension. Its opening phrases combine descending gestures, weighty chords and the marking sempre con passione. Brahms nevertheless inserts frequent poco ritardando, in tempo and poco sostenuto directions: momentum depends on organised rubato, never on arbitrary slowing.

At bar 49 a Vivo suddenly lightens the texture. The two pianists exchange short cells, accents and quick shifts before Tempo I returns. Across 137 bars, the challenge is to preserve one identity beneath these contrasting faces. The secondo needs a readable bass in impassioned passages, while the primo must avoid rushing ornaments and ascending figures.

Rehearse the three joins separately: the entrance of the Vivo, its close and the return of Allegro non assai. Agree on a shared gesture for each recovery of tempo. In the opening, count rests and sustained notes as precisely as runs; in the Vivo, keep attacks brief and buoyant. Changes of pace will then sound natural because the underlying pulse has never vanished.
