About this work
The eighth Hungarian Dance is a 171-bar Presto in A minor, the longest of the dances preserved in this group. Its pianissimo opening rests on repeated chords and connected lines moving under tension. Forte surges, accents and sudden returns to pianissimo change the colour without altering the fundamental speed.
Primo and secondo often use similar rhythms in different registers. This can create a powerful ensemble but becomes opaque if both pianists press every chord. Later octave figures and quick runs broaden the sound space before the opening material returns. Articulation and short silences must remain audible through the crescendos.
Begin with repeated chords at half volume, choosing which ones carry the phrase. Add dynamics in stages without accelerating through crescendos. Practise octave passages with attacks close to the keys and coordinate releases between the parts. The Presto gains energy from an elastic gesture; a hard attack on every beat would exhaust the sound long before the end.
