Danse hongroise n°10 en Mi majeur (4 mains)

About this work

The tenth Hungarian Dance is a Presto in E major in which both pianists constantly pass fragments of scales, octaves and chords to one another. The writing sounds brilliant from the first bar but includes numerous piano and sostenuto retreats. These contrasts prevent its 98 bars from becoming one undifferentiated race.

The primo often occupies the upper register with connected runs and octaves, while the secondo maintains moving basses and takes up several motifs. From bar 67 the figures grow denser; sempre più presto gradually drives the coda towards a sharply defined close. Accelerating too early would make this final stage impossible and blur the handovers.

Choose an opening Presto that leaves reserve for the coda. Practise every run through its arrival note, then connect transfers between parts without accenting the join. In piano episodes, lighten touch rather than slowing. Spread the stages of sempre più presto across several phrases so that acceleration becomes a shared direction rather than a contest between partners.
