About this work
The eleventh Hungarian Dance leaves the brilliance of the preceding numbers for a Poco andante in D minor. An ornamented primo line advances in small surges above a secondo alternating discreet bass notes, chords and rests. Accents remain important, but they inflect the phrase instead of producing a heavy march.
Its 58 bars develop two principal textures. The first uses short figures and dolce replies; the second extends the lines through sustained secondo chords and regular primo groups. A return of the opening motif gathers these experiences together. Balance is the main difficulty: accompaniment must retain rhythm without taking the melody’s place.
Play the secondo alone, giving each bass note a destination, then add the primo at half voice. Prepare ornaments over a stable pulse and avoid placing them before the beat. In legato passages, renew pedal with the harmony while preserving written rests. A flexible Poco andante gives details room to breathe without turning the piece into a slow movement.
