About this work
The twelfth Hungarian Dance is a 139-bar Presto in D minor. Its pianissimo opening is almost furtive: the primo begins with rests and short figures while the secondo establishes motion. Entries gradually complete one another until the first forte bursts, then immediately subside into lighter material.
A Poco meno presto broadens the phrase around bar 60. Later animato, tranquillo and another Presto redistribute energy before the opening material returns. Across eight pages, the duet depends on exact handovers: a scale begun in one part often finds its reply or support in the other. Rapid dynamic shifts must not distort the common tempo.
Practise entries where one pianist plays while the other counts several bars. Join runs through their arrival points without accenting the transfer. Broaden the gesture in Poco meno presto while retaining the Presto subdivision. Tranquillo passages need greater softness, not a slower pulse. Each return can then recover momentum without visible effort.
