About this work
The thirteenth Hungarian Dance opens Andantino grazioso in D major. The primo draws a simple line punctuated by accents and small appoggiaturas; the secondo replies with spaced chords and short melodic fragments. Grace comes from two-beat buoyancy and release rather than an excessively slow tempo.
At bar 19 a pianissimo Vivace abruptly changes the gait. Regular quavers in the secondo support short primo chords before the texture grows towards forte. After a diminuendo, Andantino grazioso returns at bar 47. This clear 59-bar design depends above all on handling its two transitions.
Give the opening a sufficiently active pulse for accents to remain elegant. In Vivace, preserve the secondo’s regularity and place primo chords without prolonging them. Prepare the return by gradually reducing weight rather than beat. When Andantino returns, recover its original colour with broader breathing, as though a familiar phrase were seen in altered light.
