About this work
The fifteenth Hungarian Dance begins Allegretto grazioso in B-flat major with a dolce leggero articulation that resists any heaviness. Primo lines glide above a highly active secondo: basses, broken chords and contrary motion sustain momentum even when the dynamic falls back to piano.
As its 103 bars unfold, animato, ad libitum, più vivace and più presto increase tension. Brahms nevertheless interrupts this drive with sostenuto and dolce returns. The design is not a continuous acceleration; it alternates departures, releases and renewed impulses until ritardando sempre prepares the final in tempo close.
Practise every section at the same moderate tempo first, settling handovers and chords. Add acceleration in stages agreed between both players. The secondo keeps a light, precise bass while the primo avoids pulling runs forward. Retain the acquired pulse in dolce returns and change only the colour. Final liveliness will then sound constructed rather than rushed.
