Danse hongroise n°16 en Fa mineur (4 mains)

About this work

The sixteenth Hungarian Dance begins Con moto in F minor with an espressivo phrase shared between both players. The primo unfolds connected lines while the secondo supports them through basses and replies that keep motion alive. A brief ritardando leads as early as bar 20 into a far more angular Presto.

The fast section accumulates accents and chords before yielding to Poco meno presto. Lines again become amabile and dolce, with more flexible imitation between the parts. Tempo I then restores Presto energy for the close of the 106 bars. The central task is not to juxtapose three tempos but to reveal their rhythmic kinship.

Choose a subdivision that remains perceptible in all three sections. Let slurs guide emphasis in Con moto; shorten the gesture in Presto without hardening the sound. Poco meno presto should broaden breathing while preserving direction. Rehearse the final transition to Tempo I repeatedly until both partners restart without an added signal.
