Danse hongroise n°18 en Ré majeur (4 mains)

About this work

The eighteenth Hungarian Dance is a Molto vivace in D major beginning pianissimo sempre. The primo gives a light line buoyancy through trills and small appoggiaturas, while the secondo maintains regular accompaniment, often over detached basses. Early forte outbursts should flash rather than establish a permanently heavier sound.

Across 73 bars, roles continually cross. Rising arpeggios pass between the parts, octaves briefly widen the texture and dynamics immediately fall back to pianissimo. These instant changes are the central difficulty: both pianists must release together after each accent without allowing resonance to blur what follows.

Practise trills and appoggiaturas in rhythm, then restore them quietly. Join arpeggios through arrival notes so that transfers between parts remain invisible. Use a quick attack rather than sustained weight in forte passages. Brief pedal is sufficient for the harmonies; clear it at changes of register to preserve the lightness required by Molto vivace.
