About this work
The twentieth Hungarian Dance begins Poco allegretto in E minor, espressivo, with a line shaped by flexible supports. Primo and secondo share melodic fragments instead of maintaining fixed theme and accompaniment roles. Crescendos remain short and frequently fall back to piano, giving the opening mobile gravity rather than solemnity.
At bar 25 the Vivace in E major changes the light. Accents tighten, ornaments multiply and both parts progress towards animato sempre. Several fermatas suspend this drive before Tempo I restores Poco allegretto at bar 49. The 74 bars therefore depend on contrast of mode, pace and touch.
In the opening, distribute the melody between parts while preserving a single phrase colour. Shorten bass notes in Vivace and prepare fermatas together. Retain the first tempo internally during the suspension before Tempo I. The return must recover its expression from the first note, without a settling-in period or excessive pedal.
