Danse hongroise n°21 en Mi mineur (4 mains)

About this work

The twenty-first Hungarian Dance closes the collection with a Vivace in E minor. Short chords and accents launch the piece before long quaver figures begin circulating between primo and secondo. The motion retains a sharply defined rhythmic edge even when the lines become more connected.

After a compact opening section, animato and leggiero lighten the texture. Scales occupy more space, octaves answer one another and Più presto at bar 49 begins the final drive. Its 81 bars require genuine duet coordination: several runs reveal their complete shape only as they pass from one part to the other.

Practise every handover by isolating one partner’s final note and the other’s first. Opening chords should remain brief, with decisive accents but no sustained weight. Keep a margin of speed before Più presto and build the crescendo across several systems. The ending carries more authority when both parts arrive together with a still-readable pulse rather than uncontrolled acceleration.
