About this work
The tenth Hungarian Dance opens in E major with a Presto of sharply accented chords. High-register replies and leaping basses continually move the weight of the bar. This solo-piano version retains the E-major key of the four-hand collection and therefore differs from some transposed orchestral versions also heard today.
Across three pages, close chords alternate with quick runs, more connected passages and strongly rhythmic returns. The dance proceeds through immediate contrast. Excessive speed would make accents identical and leaps unreliable, whereas the Presto needs elasticity. Very short breaths before a return belong to the rhythm and are not invitations to slow broadly.
Practise basses with their accents before adding chord tops. Group runs towards their destinations and keep the hand close to the keyboard. Prepare wide leaps during the preceding value instead of throwing the arm at the last moment. When the theme returns, recover its articulation before its volume; spring will make the ending livelier than a simple increase of force.
