About this work
The sixth Hungarian Dance changes pace with almost theatrical speed. A broad phrase may be interrupted by a quick gesture, then resume as though it had merely held its breath. These breaks create the piece’s character. Smoothing them out removes its humour; exaggerating them without a common pulse turns the music into a sequence of effects.
First establish a reference tempo, even though the music later moves away from it. Slowdowns and accelerations will then become measured gestures rather than accidents. In repeated chords, use arm weight and release it immediately. Accents should direct the dance, not add hardness to every beat.
The version offered here is for solo piano. It concentrates between two hands gestures that also circulate in the cycle’s four-hand version. Divide voices according to their role: melody, bass, answer, or punctuation. When material returns, adjust colour or articulation slightly instead of changing pace at random. The surprise will remain lively while the form stays coherent.
