About this work
The third Intermezzo of Op. 117 moves through C-sharp minor over a regular figure that almost never stops. Andante con moto: motion must remain perceptible beneath legato lines and long sustained tones. The hands share the motif, basses and replies, creating a close texture that always has direction.
Two expansions alter the route. Poco più lento and then Più lento suspend momentum, open the register and reveal more widely spaced chords. The opening motif nevertheless returns inside the texture before regaining the foreground. Across five pages, Brahms creates not so much an opposition as a gradual deepening of one rhythmic idea.
Practise the regular figure without pedal, choosing one directional note in each group. Add sustained lines without reattacking them when they pass between hands. Retain the Andante subdivision in slower passages. Prepare the return through bass and dynamics rather than acceleration so that the motif regains its place as though it had never fully disappeared.
