About this work
Intermezzo Op. 118 No. 4 sets an Allegretto un poco agitato in F minor from small cells imitated between the hands. One figure begins in a register and its answer enters before the first has fully disappeared. That overlap creates the agitation; it requires neither hard sound nor unstable speed.
The central texture broadens and lines become more connected before the opening imitations return. Several accents fall inside the bar, shifting the foreground without altering the beat. Each entry needs independence while sharing one harmonic direction. Otherwise these four pages collapse into undifferentiated perpetual motion.
Practise each cell with matching fingering and dynamic shape in both hands. Then overlap entries very slowly without pedal, retaining the ends of motifs. Add short pedal only when the lines remain clear. In the central episode, lengthen the gesture rather than the tempo. The return will gain tension if the underlying pulse has never been abandoned.
