About this work
The third piece of Op. 76 is a Grazioso Intermezzo in A-flat major. Its upper line moves in small curves above a regular accompaniment that suggests a calm step. The apparent simplicity is deceptive: inner notes and harmonic suspensions colour almost every phrase without interrupting the motion.
A central episode darkens the colour and tightens the writing before the opening idea returns. The melody sometimes lies inside chords or continues from one hand to the other. Reading horizontally is therefore more useful than placing a loud tune over an undifferentiated background. Dynamic changes are modest, yet they show precisely where a phrase opens and where it withdraws.
Isolate the principal line, then add the bass without inner chord notes. Once both directions are stable, complete the texture quietly. Renew the pedal with the harmony while preserving small articulations. At the return of Grazioso, recover the opening touch without an exaggerated slowing: recognition comes from colour and breathing, not from an added effect.
