Intermezzo No. 6 unfolds as an Andante con moto in A major whose gentleness depends on motion. A dolce line rests above flexible figures, then moves into the middle register while the bass continues to guide the harmony. Con moto prevents the short phrases from becoming static or overly restrained.
Brahms continually changes the location of the foreground. A top note may begin the phrase, an inner voice take over its direction and a bass prepare the next arrival. Crescendos remain contained and the texture rarely needs a massive sound. The centre widens register and dynamics before bringing back the opening material in a slightly altered light.
Mark the principal line in each bar, even when it changes hands. Then practise the accompaniment alone with a flexible pulse and directed bass. Combine the layers at half voice before adding dynamics without changing tempo. Short pedal is often sufficient; listen to the end of each harmony before renewing it so that middle-register replies remain clear.
