Intermezzo en La mineur Op. 116-2
About this work
Intermezzo Op. 116 No. 2 sets a restrained song above a steady flow of triplets. The challenge is not simply to bring out the right hand, but to let the melody breathe while the accompaniment keeps moving. Changes of register and inner voices should colour the phrase rather than break it apart.
The Non troppo presto section quickens the surface and raises the tension. Prepare that contrast without rushing the semiquavers, then recover the precise weight and pulse of the Andante when it returns. Clear pedalling, renewed with the bass, can bind the lines without clouding their dissonances.
The opening bars provide a useful balance test: play the triplets alone at a low dynamic, add the upper chords, and find continuity between their sustained notes. At each change of key, allow the new colour to come from the harmony rather than adding another gesture.
