About this work
The first Intermezzo of Op. 118 occupies only two pages, yet Allegro non assai, ma molto appassionato concentrates considerable tension. A-minor chords answer between the hands while lines press upward through them. Non assai prevents passion from becoming haste: urgency grows from displaced supports and delayed resolutions.
The material gradually brightens towards A major. This is not a second idea placed beside the first, but seems to grow from the same intervals as they become more connected and luminous. The final bars calm the motion without erasing earlier friction. The whole design depends on a swift transformation of colour.
Play the chord tops as one line before adding basses. Keep inner voices quiet enough for resolutions to remain audible. Enlarge the gesture through crescendos without pressing the pulse. At the move into major, lighten attack and renew pedal more often; the release will register without an exaggerated slowing.
