Intermezzo en La mineur Op. 76-7

About this work

The seventh Intermezzo opens in A minor with plain, almost spare chords. Moderato semplice does not mean uniform: the line moves between top notes, inner voices and bass. Rests and sustained tones carry as much weight as attacks, producing calm gravity without heaviness.

A more animated passage tightens the rhythm and increases density before the opening texture returns. This contrast fits into only two pages and should be prepared without theatrical rupture. Contrary motion between the hands and small inner dissonances keep changing the colour. Chords work best as several joined lines rather than a sequence of blocks.

Break down each chord and identify the voice leading to the next one. Then replay the passage with fingers close to the keys. In the central episode, retain the same underlying pulse and let animation come from shorter values. Reduce weight gradually at the return so that the final simplicity results from the journey rather than from a loss of energy.
