Intermezzo Op. 116 No. 4 balances two very short gestures. The left hand rises after a rest, and the right answers with a falling dolce line. E major is shaded by darker harmonies from the opening bars; let those tensions speak without treating them as isolated surprises.

The silence before each gesture belongs to the phrase. Count it as attentively as the notes, and resist filling every gap with pedal. Pedalling with the harmony, while holding important notes with the fingers where possible, preserves the Adagio’s depth without blurring its chromatic movement.

Then rehearse the hands as equal partners. The bass is more than an accompaniment, while the upper line should not become an over-projected solo. In the ben legato episode, prepare the wider reaches before adding volume: the melody gains continuity when each arrival remains supple.

Brahms thickens the register and chords when the opening material returns. Keep its breathing tempo nevertheless. The expressive high point grows through resonance and range; slowing it excessively would loosen the quiet tension that binds the work’s 72 measures.
