About this work
The Andantino teneramente of the sixth Intermezzo places a flexible E-major line above continuous arpeggios. Both hands share accompaniment and melody, so the foreground often changes finger without changing colour. Brahms’s tenderness depends on this continuity, not on slowing at every peak.
The centre darkens the harmony and increases rhythmic tension. Arpeggios become more insistent, registers move apart and inner voices gain space. When the first idea returns, it should recover simplicity while retaining the memory of this detour. The three pages therefore form a precise arch despite their apparent freedom.
Practise the melody alone with final fingering, then play the accompaniment at the lowest useful volume. Combine both layers without pedal before adding short, clean changes. Increase direction rather than weight in the centre. At the return, avoid slowing immediately; allow texture and dynamics to recreate the opening calm first.
