Intermezzo en Mi mineur Op. 119-2

About this work

The second Intermezzo of Op. 119 maintains discreet unease. In E minor, Andantino un poco agitato gives a continuous figure the task of carrying chords, short lines and displaced accents. Motion must remain regular beneath dynamic changes; accelerating through every crescendo would lose the opening’s contained tension.

At the centre, Andantino grazioso transforms the material into a more flexible dance. Rhythm simplifies, the key brightens and phrases gain space. Tempo primo restores the agitated figure, yet both characters continue to answer one another. Across five pages, contrast depends as much on touch and articulation as on tempo.

Play the continuous figure alone while bringing out changes of direction. Then add chords without altering the beat. In Andantino grazioso, lighten weak beats and let the bass lead phrases. Rehearse the transition into Tempo primo from several bars earlier. The reprise should recover inner agitation without erasing the flexibility learned in the central section.
