About this work
The first Intermezzo of Op. 117 opens like a lullaby in E-flat major. A German verse printed above the music places the image of a sleeping child before Andante moderato begins. The melody rocks above repeated chords; its simplicity requires a very stable pulse and genuinely released phrase endings.
The central Più Adagio darkens the colour. Voices draw closer, basses become more insistent and harmonic frictions delay resolution. Un poco più Andante then prepares the lullaby’s return. These three pages do not rely on spectacular dynamic contrast, but on the way the same rocking motion changes weight and register.
Play the melody without chords to establish its long directions. Add the bass, then inner voices at low volume. Keep the subdivision active in Più Adagio so that tension does not become static. At the return, recover the original motion before reducing dynamics. The final phrase should settle naturally without an added slowing in every bar.
