Intermezzo en Mib mineur Op. 118-6

About this work

The final Intermezzo of Op. 118 opens in E-flat minor with a bare low-register motif. Andante, largo e mesto: isolated intervals and rests create a slow tread whose tension depends as much on waiting as on sound. Overlong pedal would erase those separations and make the opening vaguer than the notation suggests.

More impassioned episodes widen the register, multiply chords and drive the dynamics towards dense peaks. The first motif returns between these waves, sometimes reduced to only a few notes. The design seeks no triumphant outcome. It ends by recovering the dark opening material, now carrying everything that has passed through it.

Measure rests exactly and listen to the end of each bass before moving on. Group rising chords towards one peak and release weight between phrases. Reserve the deepest sound for arrivals rather than every low note. At the final return, gradually reduce resonance without slowing each bar; the stripped texture is sufficient to close the piece.
