Intermezzo en Si b majeur Op. 76-4
About this work
Intermezzo Op. 76 No. 4 begins with a supple rocking motion in B-flat major. Its melody is not a solo laid over an accompaniment: it passes through the texture and continues across sustained notes. Keep the pulse moving under Brahms’s Allegretto grazioso marking, without leaning on every harmonic change.
Practise the outer lines first, then restore the inner voices without giving them all the same weight. The long slurs need genuine finger connection even when the pedal is used. Maintain the same breath through the more animated passage: the writing grows denser, but its character should not become heavy.
Notice where the melody slips beneath a held note or rises from a middle voice. Sing that line before playing it: its contour becomes clearer and the chords find their balance more naturally. The opening idea can then sound recognised when it returns, rather than merely repeated.
The dynamic changes are often contained; they enlarge the phrase without breaking its intimacy. Keep some sound in reserve through the early episodes so that the high point can open without becoming hard.
