About this work
The first Intermezzo of Op. 119 begins in B minor with descending thirds that seem to dissolve before finding support. Adagio, molto piano: intervals pass between the hands and form one continuous line inside the chords. Silence between entries belongs to the tension and should not be filled by generous pedal.
The centre thickens the texture and widens the register. Thirds become accompaniment, counter-line or chord peak before the opening material returns in an even barer form. These two pages demand constant attention to sustained notes. Several tones must remain alive while another finger or the other hand takes over.
Practise the thirds as one voice without the remaining notes and listen to the direction of each interval. Add basses while observing their exact durations. Apply pedal after attack and renew it as soon as the harmony moves. Increase sound depth without accelerating in the broader passage. The return gains fragility when tempo stays stable and touch remains close to the keys.
