About this work
The Intermezzo moves along a line that never seems to find a final point of support. Syncopations, inner voices, and exchanges between the hands maintain this unease without resorting to large outbursts. The challenge is to make continuity sing beneath a mobile surface, with a bass that is present but never heavy.
First reduce the texture to melody and bass. Then restore the inner notes, deciding which continue a voice and which fill the harmony. This hierarchy prevents every finger from playing with equal weight. Pedal can connect resonances, but every bass change calls for fresh listening.
The central section widens the register and breathing. Keep its connection with the initial movement: the tempo may breathe, but it should not stop. When the opening figures return, they have acquired another gravity. A more restrained colour and longer phrase endings are enough to reveal it. The piece benefits from remaining intimate even when the sound expands.
