Rhapsodie en Si mineur Op. 79-1

About this work

The first Rhapsody of Op. 79 opens with an Agitato in B minor where chords, octaves and broken lines move as one surge. Its first pages alternate emphatic blocks with more mobile replies. Power is only part of the task: bass direction must remain audible and phrase peaks need to rise above the mass of sound.

A broader, more lyrical episode changes the breathing. Chords spread out, the register opens and the pace relaxes before several in-tempo returns. Brahms does not juxtapose two separate pieces: shared rhythms and contours connect the sections. The nine pages make a broad arch whose reprises intensify before a coda gathers both characters.

Map the tempo changes and practise the five bars surrounding each one. In Agitato, group chords by phrase instead of driving every beat. In the lyrical episode, keep the bass moving under long values and reduce pedal at harmonic changes. Reserve the broadest fortissimo for the final pages so that the form remains clear even when the whole keyboard is engaged.
