About this work
Romanze Op. 118 No. 5 presents an apparently simple Andante theme in F major. Chords set out a regular phrase, but inner notes and suspensions gently alter its colour. The title does not imply one isolated melody above neutral accompaniment; expression comes from movement of the foreground within the chords themselves.
The theme undergoes several variations before a central Allegretto grazioso lightens the rhythm and lets the line move more freely. When the Andante returns, the familiar texture carries a memory of that episode. In only three pages, Brahms creates contrast through density, articulation and register rather than large swings of volume.
Break each chord apart and locate the note that leads towards the next one. Practise that line alone, then add the bass before restoring the remaining voices. Keep weak beats light and the bass directed in the Allegretto. At the Andante return, recover the first tempo without heaviness; deeper attack and restrained pedal are enough to give the reprise greater gravity.
