Sonate n°02 en Fa# mineur Op. 2

About this work

The Op. 2 Sonata begins in F-sharp minor with a restless idea that quickly crosses several registers. Brahms wrote it in 1852, before Op. 1, and dedicated it to Clara Schumann. Allegro non troppo, ma energico contains two equally important instructions: the impulse must be firm, but excessive speed would hide hand crossings and middle voices.

An inward Andante con espressione leads to a Scherzo whose trio relaxes the square profile. The Finale opens with a Sostenuto introduction and then moves into Allegro non troppo e rubato. That rubato is not permission to lose the beat in every bar. Delays, returns and local accelerations need an underlying pulse that can always be recovered.

Practise corresponding returns of the opening motif at the same tempo so that register and dynamic differences become audible. In the Andante, establish the outer voices before adding the middle. Keep a silent subdivision through freer sections of the Finale and approach each reprise from the preceding bar. The sonata becomes more intense when contrast comes from the writing rather than from constant added flexibility.
