Valse Op.39 n° 3

About this work

The third of Brahms’s Sixteen Waltzes Op.39, written in 1865 for piano four hands, appears here in a transcription for solo guitar. Its restrained minor-key character is compressed into a few phrases in which melody rises above a three-beat accompaniment.

The transcription distributes bass, chords and upper voice on a single staff. Position changes are brief but must allow the harmony to resonate; the repeat offers an opportunity to refine phrasing rather than merely duplicate the same gestures.

Isolate the bass on the first beat, then add chords without hardening beats two and three. Project the upper voice through duration rather than a repeated accent, and anticipate fingerings that can connect the end of each phrase.
