Valse Op.39 n° 9

About this work

Brahms’s ninth Waltz Op.39 is one of the most restrained miniatures in the collection composed for piano four hands. This solo-guitar transcription preserves its regular phrasing and understated sway, with a clear melody above short chords.

Successive returns slightly shift the upper voice or bass, creating small inflections without enlarging the form. The challenge is to keep three layers legible on one staff while allowing the dance to move naturally.

Practise melody and bass first, then insert the inner chord tones. The first beat provides support without becoming heavy; allow common strings to resonate between positions and prepare the closing cadence with a slight release rather than an excessive slowdown.
