Variations sur un thème de Haydn Op. 56a

About this work

The so-called Haydn theme is presented by the winds in B-flat major, with an irregular phrase length that resists neat symmetrical division. In 1873 Brahms built eight orchestral variations and an expansive finale from it. The theme’s historical attribution to Haydn is no longer secure. That uncertainty does not alter the work’s method, which explores the melody’s rhythmic, harmonic and instrumental possibilities.

Each variation preserves a recognisable skeleton while changing character. Woodwinds lighten the texture, strings displace the rhythm, brass broaden cadences and percussion enters only at selected points. The finale constructs a passacaglia over a repeating bass; layer after layer accumulates until the theme returns on a majestic scale.

To rehearse the thirty-eight pages, play the theme and bass of each variation without inner voices first. Compare articulation and tempo before pursuing dynamic contrast. In the finale, count the bass repetitions and assign every new entry clearly. Variety then becomes one continuous progression rather than a gallery of separate pieces.
