Variations sur un thème de Paganini en la mineur Op. 35 livre 1
About this work
Book I of the Paganini Variations treats the Twenty-fourth Caprice as raw material. After the Non troppo presto theme, fourteen variations isolate different keyboard problems: octaves, thirds, sixths, arpeggios, repeated chords and crossings. Brahms also called the set “Studies for Piano,” yet virtuosity serves a continuous reshaping of the same harmonic outline.
Density is as demanding as speed. Some variations place the motif on top, others in the bass or inside heavily filled chords. The eleventh, Andante, briefly suspends the drive before the second half rebuilds pressure towards the fourteenth, Allegro. Each number needs its own physical gesture while the theme remains traceable.
Practise the harmonic skeleton before adding double notes or octaves. Restore one difficulty at a time, quietly, and find the release between groups. Mark the thematic note when it lies inside the texture. When joining variations, choose each opening tempo deliberately; progression should come from character rather than automatic acceleration.
