Variations sur un thème de Schumann en Fa # mineur Op. 9
About this work
Brahms takes the theme of Op. 9 from a piano piece by Robert Schumann and presents it Ziemlich langsam, fairly slowly, in F-sharp minor. Written in 1854 and dedicated to Clara Schumann, the sixteen variations do much more than decorate a tune. They successively relocate bass, rhythm, register and density until the model can become almost invisible.
The markings create a chain of characters: Poco più moto, Allegro capriccioso, Andante, Schnell, Poco Adagio and Allegretto poco scherzando. Several variations behave as replies, while the final group stretches time and returns fragments of the theme in a more distant light. Common tones and cadences preserve continuity even when the surface seems entirely new.
First learn the theme through its bass and principal arrivals. In each variation, identify which of those reference points survives and project it without forcing. Practise virtuoso passages as harmonic cells rather than finger sequences. Keep the final pulse of one variation alive before starting the next; the work will then sound like a journey rather than sixteen unrelated studies.
