Consolation layers three musical planes: a connected melody, an even inner motion and a bass that anchors the harmony. The piece remains peaceful only when those voices do not compete for the same space. The inner pattern’s staff changes require particular care with balance.
Let the upper voice breathe
Play the melody alone first and mark its arrival points. Then practise the accompaniment very quietly, connecting its quavers across changes of hand or staff. When the layers are reunited, avoid rushing the crescendos; the upper line should remain audible even in the fullest passages.
