25 Easy Studies, Op. 100: Tendre Fleur

About this work

The tenth study, Tendre Fleur, is a Moderato in D major and 4/4. An expressive line extends above broken accompaniment and bass notes that anchor the harmony. Long values require inner continuity: the destination of the phrase must remain audible while the fingers gently renew the surrounding sound.

Repeats present the same material under different dynamics and in different registers. Crescendos should enlarge an arc spanning several bars rather than swell each motif. Accompaniment notes close to the melody are especially easy to overplay and must remain blended into the middle layer.

Play the line alone and mark its high points. Practise bass notes with each chord change, then add inner notes as quietly as possible. Join the hands without pedal to test the slurs. Finally introduce pedal renewed with the harmony, without carrying bass notes beyond their function.
