The Eagle's Force

About this work

The madrigal advances through voices that pursue and answer one another around the text. Its energy comes less from uniform choral volume than from clear entries and the way a syllable passes from one section to another.

Speak the text in rhythm before singing, then locate the voice that temporarily carries the idea. The others need to retain their line without covering the consonants that make the imitation audible.

In rehearsal, tune intervals on sustained sounds and decide which consonants can be shared. The pulse must continue through individual breaths so that the counterpoint remains alive.
