About this work
Carcassi’s first Étude from Opus 60, marked Allegro, turns a continuous semiquaver pattern into genuine polyphonic work. Sustained upper notes trace a line above the arpeggios while the bass regularly changes its point of support.
Across two pages the hands travel through several positions without breaking the flow. Scale fragments connect the chords, and returning patterns make it possible to judge rhythmic evenness rather than pursuing speed alone.
Practise slowly while projecting the top note of each group. Prepare left-hand changes before the bass arrives and keep the right hand close to the strings; evenness comes from economical movement, not from a uniformly hard attack.
