Duo en Sol pour deux guitares

About this work

Ferdinando Carulli’s Duo in G rests on a highly musical teaching principle: the two guitars genuinely share the conversation. One introduces a phrase, the other supports or answers it, and then the roles move on. The motifs remain accessible, but the ensemble demands a shared pulse and attention to phrase endings—two skills that no metronome can negotiate on your behalf.

Before playing the two parts together, find the moments when the melody changes guitar. The accompaniment must then become lighter without disappearing. Bass notes give the harmony its direction, while short answering figures sustain the motion. Matching the articulation of shared motifs helps the listener follow the dialogue.

Begin by beating time and speaking the entries, then play at a tempo that allows each guitarist to listen to the other. Agree on fingerings that affect connections and breaths. If a passage drifts apart, restart from the two bars before it: the problem often begins earlier than the place where it becomes audible. And yes, counting is still allowed after the first year of guitar lessons.
