Nocturne No. 8 in D-flat Major, Op. 27 No. 2

About this work

In Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2, the space between events matters almost as much as the notes. The 6/8 metre establishes a discreet sway over which the right hand can take its time. Before exploring rubato, mark the broad stages of the line: opening, release, renewal and climax. The discourse will then retain direction even when the tempo becomes flexible.

The embellishments vary in density as the piece unfolds. They do not all require the same speed or prominence. Isolate their first and final notes, then fit the intervening sounds into that span without moving the arrival. This prevents decoration from delaying the phrase. In the left hand, bass notes provide the foundations; the chords that follow can remain light and in the background.

Build the main crescendo across several periods instead of enlarging every bar. At the most intense point, preserve breadth of gesture and rhythmic suppleness. The subsequent withdrawal should feel prepared, all the way to the closing calando. Renewing the pedal after low-register changes preserves the transparency of the D-flat-major harmonies.
