Polonaise Op. 26

About this work

Opus 26 brings together two polonaises whose shared rhythm leads to very different characters. One asserts more dramatic contrasts; the other requires continuity of song and a more inward direction of phrase.

Practise the polonaise motif with the bass alone in order to stabilise the pulse. Then add the melody while distinguishing structural supports from accents that belong to a local gesture.

Compare the two pieces before fixing tempo and pedal. Dynamics and timbre need to reveal their difference without systematically making every first beat heavy.
