About this work
Chopin’s Polonaise, Op. 44, retains the frame of a dance while extending it into a much larger form. The dotted rhythm and firm stresses of the opening establish a proud march, soon crossed by runs, octaves and shifts of register. At the centre, a mazurka episode displaces the accent and the breathing before the polonaise returns.
Practise the characteristic rhythm without pounding it. The left hand must carry the step while the right preserves its direction through chords and runs. In the octaves, prepare shifts in groups and keep the wrist flexible; physical tension does not make the argument more heroic, only shorter.
The mazurka episode must not sound pasted into the middle. Find its own, more supple stress, then plan the route back to the opening material. Throughout the work, mark the principal harmonic arrivals. They help establish priorities in a dense texture where everything seems to demand energy at once.
