About this work
The Polonaise Op. 53 does not enter the room: it breaks down the door. After a tense introduction, the main theme establishes its hammered accents and polonaise rhythm on an almost orchestral scale. Chopin composed the work in 1842; the familiar nickname “Heroic” does not, however, appear in the original edition.
The famous central episode is more than a test of left-hand octaves. Their obstinate repetition creates a sense of depth against which the right-hand chords call out. To keep the effect musical, hear the broad spans: tension rising, reaching its peak, receding and finally making way for the theme’s return. Treating every octave as a separate feat is the shortest route to cramp—and the longest route to Chopin.
Begin below the final tempo, using a supple lateral movement and placing accents by group rather than on every note. In the chordal passages, seek out the top line and let the inner voices enrich the harmony without stiffening the hand. The pedal should enlarge the sound, never disguise the harmonic changes. This polonaise demands power, but above all the art of keeping some in reserve.
